The Stack, Portland Bill
The Stack displays samples of the stones from old and working quarries on Portland. Fifth from top is inscribed Broadcroft Quarry Basebed. Sixth from top is Perryfield Quarry Whitbed. Eighth from top is Jordans Quarry Basebed. The sign from the Crown Estate (mainly about birds) explains "The Stack is made from blocks of waste Portland stone; discarded and left over, from different quarries and beds all formed under a sub-tropical sea around 145 million years ago."
