Langley Vale

A village on the edge of Epsom Downs. The site was originally a farm called Langley Bottom, shown as such on 19th Century maps. It was owned by the Howards of Ashtead, forming part of the Ashtead Park estate.

The land was sold in 1888 and the 1895 1:2500 map shows the outline of planned roads, but with no housing. By the time of the 1913 1:2500 map groups of houses had been built, varying from a short terrace of cottages to larger houses in big plots. A post office was shown in Langley Bottom Road (now Langley Vale Road), just north of the exit of the village from Roseberry Road, and a mission room was shown on the site of the current St Stephen-on-the-Downs Church (which replaced the original "tin tabernacle" in 1961). Development continued throughout the 20th Century, with some gaps still remaining on 1954-5 1:2500 map; it was not until the 1978 version that the map became full.
