RAF 100: Sopwith Snipe at Albert Square
The RAF100 Aircraft Tour was a free public display of iconic aircraft in city locations around the country to coincide with the centenary of the formation of the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918. Visitors were able to get a close look at a selection of aircraft covering the RAF’s history from the First World War to the modern age. The final venue of the tour was Manchester’s Albert Square during the weekend of 14th-16th September 2018.

The oldest aircraft on display was the Sopwith Snipe I Biplane. Approximately 1100 Snipes were in service with the RAF between 1918 and 1926 as a replacement for the Sopwith Camel which had been the mainstay of the Royal Flying Corps’ and Royal Naval Air Squadron’s operations during World War I. The first Snipes entered service in April 1918 with No 43 Squadron, based at Fienvillers in France.
