Apparently the most photographed bridge in the Lake District. I must admit the view from here looking north is stunning and must be even better if the weather is clearer than it was for me. Winter would be pretty good as well, no leaves on the trees to block the view!
This is a packhorse bridge on the single track road from the B5289 to the hamlet of Watendlath. Probably an 18th Century replacement for an earlier structure, with a 19th century parapet, it is Grade II Listed. It is a narrow single-span segmental hump-back bridge constructed with slate rubble over split-slate voussoirs, (the truncated wedge-shaped pieces that form the arch). The solid parapets have rubble coping.
Packhorse bridges are usually narrow with low parapets to accommodate the often very wide loads strapped to the pack-horses. Some bridges have no side walls at all which was originally the case here. There is another fine example at the end of this road in Watendlath
