ST5973 : Homes of the merchant classes

Homes of the merchant classes
Homes of the merchant classes
Very little of Bristol's castle remains, but this short section of wall is believed to be part of the south flank. Having been brought down after the Civil War, merchants were quick to take hold of the site; they often incorporated remaining structures. Here we can see the old arrowslits next to reddish sections where small flues can be seen - they would have been fireplaces on the inside of merchants' homes.
