University Library, West Road, Cambridge
The main university research library. Its first home was the Old Schools complex (which remain the University’s main administration centre, near the Senate House) until it outgrew those premises. It was then moved to this site, that of the former WW1 military hospital, The First Eastern General, where it is now sandwiched between Robinson College and the Memorial Court of Clare College. The new “UL” building was constructed between 1931-34 under Giles Gilbert Scott with the American philanthropist John D. Rockefeller providing most of the funds. He also persuaded the architect to add the 157 feet (48 m) tall front-facing tower. “The UL” also has a large storage facility in Ely which has more than 100 kilometres of shelving for future legal deposit books and periodicals. Regular exhibitions, often featuring items from its collections, are open to the public.
