Memorial Court, Clare College, Cambridge
These buildings are situated on part of the 8 acres (3.2 ha) site - a former cricket field once owned by King's and Clare Colleges - that was the site of a former WW1 military hospital, i.e. the First Eastern General Hospital. The hospital's peak occupancy was 1,700 beds and it is thought to have treated some 70,000 casualties between 1914-19. When the hospital closed some of the rows of Nissen huts were converted into temporary dwelling units by the local council to help alleviate the acute post-war housing shortage. However, between 1926-29 the huts were progressively dismantled.
