Appleby Bridge
The double-arched bridge over the River Eden dates from 1889. The earlier bridge had a gatehouse at one end to regulate the passage of people and goods and to collect tolls. There was also a chantry chapel here where a priest would pray for your safe passage.
During the annual Appleby Fair which is held here every June, travellers wash their horses in the river at this spot.
