Norman arch, Much Wenlock Priory
Norman arches in the ruined remains of the Chapter House of Wenlock Priory. The priory at Much Wenlock stands on a site originally founded as a monastery by the Anglo-Saxons around 680 by King Merewalh of Mercia, whose abbess daughter Milburge was hailed as a saint. Her relics were miraculously re-discovered here in 1101, attracting both pilgrims and prosperity to the priory.
The Normans re-founded Wenlock as a priory of Cluniac monks. Today the priory is a substantial ruin and is in the care of English Heritage.
