Jarlshof Visitor Centre and the "Old House of Sumburgh"
The Castle, now known as Jarlshof house is the largest structure on the Jarlshof site; it was built after the Shetlands had passed into Scottish rule. Originally a medićval stone farmhouse, it was converted into a fortified house in the 16th century. At that time, the building was named “New Hall”. It was further modernised in the 17th century by Patrick Stewart, 2nd Earl of Orkney who renamed it as the “Old House of Sumburgh” but it was abandoned in the late 17th century and fell into ruin. The structure was also formerly known as “The laird’s house” and “Stewart Mansion”.
Jarlshof
Jarlshof is a fascinating excavated site on the very southern tip of the Shetland Islands near Sumburgh Head.
The site encompasses buildings from most of the ancient historical periods. Amazingly these have been kept separate such that they start with neolithic dwellings on the eastern side of the site and spiral around in a clockwise fashion through Bronze Age, early and late Iron Age, 2nd & 3rd century wheelhouses, Viking, Mediaeval and finally the C16th Laird's House. This represents a truly remarkable 4000 years of history on one site.
