Threave Castle and Fortifications
Threave Castle and Fortifications
Threave Castle was built during the 14th century as a fortified residence and administrative centre for the powerful Black Douglas family, the Lords of Galloway. The tower rivalled the royal castles of the time. An additional outer fortification was built in the mid-15th century to protect Threave from falling to King James II. The king’s forces did attack during the absence of the 9th Earl Douglas but the walls held firm for over 60 days until the defending men were bought over by the royal purse.
