Appleby Frodingham Steelworks - blast furnace complex
The cooling towers, water tower, chimneys and conveyors are all associated with the four blast furnaces to the right of centre in the background. Only two are in use with one on standby and one mothballed. We had just been on the tracks towards the centre of the complex but had not quite seen a blast furnace being tapped into a torpedo car. We did pass two torpedo cars that were nicely simmering. This huge complex is operated by British Steel and currently produces 3 million tonnes per annum.
