Queens' College, Cambridge.
A wooden footbridge similar to this one has existed here since 1749. The original one was designed by William Etheridge (1709-76) and built by James Essex the Younger (1722-84). Etheridge was a civil engineer and bridge-builder who was working on a Westminster Bridge project when he was commissioned for this work. His bridge was repaired in 1866 and then rebuilt to the same design in 1905. It bridges the River Cam and connects this part of the Queens' College site with the “Riverside Building”, the latter being the oldest building on the river at Cambridge, c.1460. The official name of this Grade II-listed bridge is the Wooden Bridge, although it is popularly known as “The Mathematical Bridge”.
