St Mary's Church, Peterborough
St Mary's Church, Peterborough
The present church was built between 1989 and 1991 replacing the Church of St Mary the Virgin which dated from 1860. The old church served a newly-created parish comprising Eastfield, Boongate and Newark to the east of the city centre. By the 1980s the old building - which was apparently built of cheap local stone - had deteriorated to the extent that demolition was considered to be the best approach with the new church being financed by the sale of surrounding land to property developers.
