Cloister Court, Queens' College, Cambridge
Renovation work in progress on the half-timbered President's Gallery. This building dates from c.1540. The cloister arches beneath the gallery building, with the two orders of chamfered bricks, distinguish them from the arches of the cloisters ahead of the Riverside Building, which have three orders. A study of the intersection of the side cloisters with the river-facing building shows that the side cloisters were constructed after those of the Riverside Building (c.1460). Previous work was done on this south side of the Long Gallery in 1911 and much of the exterior plaster was removed, the spaces between the studs filled and the gallery finish in half-timbered style. The wooden footbridge (a.k.a. the Mathematical Bridge) across the River Cam to Cripps Court can be seen behind the individuals in the picture.
