Millerhill Carbon Tower
The centrepiece of a new housing development at Millerhill.
Millerhill Carbon Tower

A feature in the village square of the new housing development at Millerhill. A planning requirement is that developers must commission and provide some public art to enhance 3.2m hightower, which was designed and made by P. Johnson & Company, Artist Blacksmiths at Ratho Byres. It tells the story of coal, from its origin in the Carboniferous seas through the various stages of its social history and exploitation by the local community. The apex is crowned by two symbolic canaries to represent hope, with reference to the use of the birds as a safety monitor in the mines. It is made of galvanised steel.
