Long Man of Wilmington
It was once believed that the earliest record of the Long Man was a drawing dated to 1766, however a drawing was discovered in 1993 of the Long Man made in 1710. Standing 231 feet high, it remains one of the greatest mysteries of the Sussex countryside.
The earliest references to the Long Man suggest the original figure was a marking in the grass rather than a solid line. During the Victorian period, the shape was marked by yellow bricks. During World War II, the figure was painted green to prevent enemy pilots using it as a landmark. In 1969, it was replaced by pre-cast concrete blocks which are now regularly painted white.
