Founded in 1229, Michelham Priory is the site of a former Augustine Priory owned by the Sussex Archaeological Society. It was dissolved in 1536. The square ashlar Gatehouse or Barbican Tower dates from the early 15th century. It is about 50 feet in height with four stories, including the cellar, which served either as a cellar or prison.
