The idea of a statue of Cromwell in Manchester was first suggested in 1860 and Matthew Noble produced a model which could be seen in his London studio. The gun metal bronze statue was finally unveiled at the junction of Cateaton Street and Deansgate SJ8398 : Manchester: Victoria Street, Cathedral and statue of Oliver Cromwell in 1875. When road widening took place in 1967 the statue was moved to Wythenshawe Park opposite Wythenshawe Hall which had been besieged by parliamentary soldiers during the Civil War.
