Stone Circle, Kenmare, Co. Kerry
The stones are not very large but there is a small dolmen (single chamber megalithic tomb) at the centre. It is regarded as the largest tone circle in the south west of Ireland. Originally there would have been impressive views from here but now the circle is enclosed by a ring of pine trees. The ambience, such as there is, is further spoilt by a "fairy tree" on which people have attached their wishes. The grass is cut very short so that some people have commented that the general effect is more like a garden feature than a prehistoric monument. Nevertheless it is one of the easiest circles to view, just a few minutes walk from the town centre. There is a small admission charge.
