Chain Home Station: EDoB ID: e11352
Standby-set Powerhouse

This bunker housed diesel generators that would have provided mains power to the site in the event of the failure of the main power supply.

The station formed a part of Britain's main air defence system in WW2, an important cog in the coordinated system of Chain Home radar or RDF stations that defended the nation from air attack throughout the war. RAF Hillhead aka Smiddyseat, is an interesting place to explore, externally relatively intact, with several bunkers, and the remains of a domestic site. It was heavily defended with a large number of type 24 and type 27 pillboxes, the latter having a combined LAA post with infantry positions. The station would appear to have become operational as a final Chain Home station during March 1942, although it had been working as an Intermediate from 1941.
