River bank with bricks and clinker
River bank with bricks and clinker
It is worth noting at the start that the shape of this part of the western bank of the River Leven does not correspond to what is, at the time of writing, shown on the 1:25000 map.

The material eroding out of the bank consists mainly of bricks and of clinker from the burning of coal. It is likely that this was used as infill (it is typical of material that would be used for this purpose from the nineteenth century onwards), a process that may account for the significant change in the line of the riverbank here as compared with earlier maps.

The article linked from the first of the end-notes includes two map extracts that show (near the lower-right corner of both maps) how this area was depicted in 1841 (on a pre-OS map) and in 1860 (on the first-edition OS map). There was then a tongue of the river reaching inland here.

That is no longer the case; it may have been the result of this infilling, perhaps in conjunction with natural processes. As discussed in the same article, the northern part of the field was quarried for sand; whether that was also done here, I do not know.
Pillanflatt :: NS3877
The land of Pillanflatt lay between Dalquhurn and Mains of Cardross, and is mentioned in medieval records in connection with the Cardross residence of King Robert the Bruce. See a Geograph article LinkExternal link for the precise location of Pillanflatt's farm buildings. See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view, showing features that are depicted on the 1:10560 OS maps from 1864 to 1938, in relation to the present-day landscape.
