The main building at Gwrych Castle
The main building at Gwrych Castle
A Grade I listed country house in the midst of renovation.
Built between 1812 and 1822 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh in memory of his maternal ancestors, the Lloyds of Gwrych, the main building contained a suite of public and private apartments. On the ground floor were the entrance hall; billiards room; round study; library; drawing room; music room and dining room. The marble staircase, built c.1914, connected the public rooms with the private areas of the family and their staff.
During World War II, the Government used the castle to house 200 Jewish refugees run by the Jewish Zionist youth movement Bnei Akiva.
It is virtually derelict inside (October 2018).
The castle was open to the public until 1985. Thereafter, it started to decline. It was bought in 1989 by Nick Tavaglione, an American businessman, for 750,000.However, his plans to renovate the building were not carried out. As a result, the castle was extensively looted and vandalised, becoming little more than a derelict shell, although it was used in 1996 as the backdrop for Prince Valiant, a film starring Edward Fox, Joanna Lumley and Katherine Heigl.
Through the intervention of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the Richard Broyd Charitable Trust, the Castle was purchased by the Gwrych Preservation Trust, on behalf of the nation, in June 2018.
The trust's ambition is to restore it and the gardens back to their former glory. Work has commenced and the grounds and parts of the castle are open to the public.
