Features such as this are very common in mining areas where a shaft has been dug and the discarded material, or at least some of it, has been arranged around the resulting hole. The working of many such shafts will have been shallow but others are very deep affairs where most of the excavated material will have been removed. Sometimes there's an open cavity so that the depth of shaft can be assessed but that's fairly unusual and not so in the case of this one.
