Windhouse
Windhouse is a distinctive former haa (laird’s house) dating from 1707 and remodelled circa 1885. The original name of the house was 'Windås' meaning built on a windy rocky ridge. The late nineteenth century castellated-gothic rebuilding contributes to the dramatic silhouette of the house when viewed from the surrounding area, making it a well-known, prominent landmark high above the main A968 road north through Yell. It is just over a mile outside the village of Mid Yell, the main settlement on the island.

The house has been unoccupied since the 1920s and is now in a ruinous condition with essentially just the walls remaining. It is a grade C listed building (LB45326 LinkExternal link ).

Windhouse, is said by some to be the most haunted house in Shetland. Its ghostly inhabitants include a lady dressed in silk who is believed to be the spirit of a woman whose skeleton was found under floorboards of the main stairs and there is also a story of a servant girl who mounts invisible steps and a ghost dog (LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) Shetland News). Its bleak appearance overlooking the head of Whalefirth Voe to the north and the ancient peat bog moors to the south, make it an ideal setting for a “haunted house” film.
