Railway sleepers capping old mineshaft
Railway sleepers capping old mineshaft
Several decades ago the owner of lands around Alston, in the interest of public safety, decided to seal open mineshafts on its ground. Many shafts were capped as was this one by the laying of old, concrete railway sleepers across the top. Others had substantial wire cages built above them which then had rocks stacked fairly loosely around; that approach would allow bats to enter and live within the shaft top: an example by Mike Quinn - Link
The slope rising beyond reaches the summit of Dead Stones; its tall summit cairn might just be visible as a tiny blip on the horizon.
