The 'Blind Beggar', Whitechapel Road
In the 1960s, this late Victorian pub. was one of the haunts of the notorious East End gang led by the Kray Brothers. One fine spring evening - the 9th April 1966 - Ronnie Kray got word that George Cornell, a member of a rival gang, was drinking in the 'Beggar'. Ordering his driver to take him there, Kray calmly walked up to Cornell and shot him in the head at point-blank range.
Nowadays, the pub is highly respectable and serves good beer and a range of food.
