Great Coxwell: the Tithe Barn
Great Coxwell: the Tithe Barn
I've compiled the following notes using a number of sources:

Apparently, in 1205 King John granted the manor of Great Coxwell to the Cistercian abbey at Beaulieu in Hants. - and it duly became a monastic grange, farmed in part by monks and in part by tenant farmers. The manor eventually passed into private hands at the dissolution of the monasteries in Henry VIII's time.

Dendrochronological evidence - the examination of patterns of growth rings in timber - suggests a date of building after 1250, and probably in the final decade of that century.

The long axis of the building runs roughly north-south - and for good functional reasons. The east and west doorways (now made smaller) were originally wagon doors, and between them - at the centre of the building - was the threshing floor. During threshing - with flails - these doors would be left open, so that the prevailing (south-west or west) breeze could carry off the chaff while leaving the (heavier) grain to be gathered up for storage.

With the coming of the Industrial Revolution and the invention of threshing machines, the threshing floor was no longer needed. Wagon entrances were opened up in the north and south walls, while the east and west entrances were made smaller.

The interior is divided into nave and aisles by timber uprights, supporting the roof. Pevsner mentions that William Morris (who often visited from Kelmscott) compared the barn to a cathedral - and it would be my guess that it was this interior structure he had most in mind.
