Stirling Castle: sundial in the Douglas Garden
The Douglas Garden, also known as the Nether Green, is to the north of the Chapel Royal: NS7894 : Stirling Castle: the Chapel Royal.

The broken pillar in the flowerbed is what drew my attention. A 1963 RCAHMS inventory of Stirlingshire's ancient monuments describes it as "part of the shaft of a sundial of 17th-century date, of which the head is missing. The shaft is square in section and is divided into panels, most of which contain geometrically-shaped sunk dials".

See LinkExternal link at Canmore for some close-up views of it, and compare the very similar shaft that appears in NN8417 : Obelisk sundial - Drummond Castle Gardens. Despite the seventeenth-century date that has been ascribed to both sundials, and the worn and fragmentary appearance of the one in the present picture, the geometrical decorations on their sides give both of them (to my eyes) a curiously modern appearance.

The name of the Douglas Garden itself refers to the murder, here at Stirling Castle, of the 8th Earl of Douglas by King James II in 1452. After being repeatedly stabbed, the Earl was thrown out of a window, his body ending up in this garden.
