St Peter's Church
Offord D'Arcy means "The upper ford of the Danes", though the river crossing of the Great Ouse is now at Offord Cluny, a mile downstream. This view of the church is from across the Great Ouse and the East Coast Main Line railway; a catenary support pole is seen in front of the south aisle. The oldest part of the building is the Norman north arcade, but most of what is seen here dates from around 1300 and, like many churches in this area, is built of the local brown cobbles. The west tower with its clasping buttresses and battlements is topped by a recessed stone-ribbed spire; Pevsner notes that the roll-moulded ribs to the bell openings and to the lucarnes "look early", but the top of the spire was rebuilt in 1870.
