Yates Wine Lodge on Grainger Street
This very elaborate building in a French Chateau style was built in 1884-7 for the Newcastle and Gateshead Gas Company. For many years it housed Wengers department store. Eventually Yates rescued it from dereliction and converted it into a pub, which thankfully left the exterior intact.
