Tally Too'er
This is one of only three Martello Towers in Scotland, the others both being in Orkney: at Hackness ND3391 : Hoy; Martello Tower at Hackness and Crockness ND3293 : Martello Tower, near Longhope. Martello Towers were built, mainly around the south of England, during the Napoleonic Wars to counter the threat of invasion from France.

The first edition of the six-inch Ordnance Survey map LinkExternal link shows the tower standing on the Martello Rocks with sea to both south and north. It isn't marked on the second edition, but the 25-inch map also shows it on offshore rocks. During the 20th century the area was 'reclaimed' and subsequently abandoned and the tower now stands rather forlornly in waste land on the fringe of Leith Docks.

The fence shown surrounding it in 2005 NT2677 : Tally Too'er, Leith, 2007 NT2677 : The Martello Tower in Wasteland and 2010 NT2677 : Martello Tower has been removed and the tower is now surrounded by a berm of earth which does nothing to enhance the view of it. There is no sign of the housing development mentioned 13 years ago.

Martello Towers

Martello Towers, or 'Martellos', were small defensive forts first built in 1805 in South East England during the Napoleonic War. They were also built on the East Coast of England and around Ireland, as well as three in Scotland.

On the flat parapet roof was mounted a cannon. The round shape of the building allowed it to rotate 360, able to defend all directions. The entrance to the tower was raised above ground level to stop easy access by the enemy. Read more Link
