War Department boundary stone number 4
War Department boundary stone number 4
This is one of several cut marks that I noticed in the space of a few minutes (see NS2677 : Bench mark on the Esplanade).

This one is War Department boundary stone number 4, one of a series of markers that delimited land under military rather than burgh jurisdiction; the enclosed space is currently occupied by NS2577 : New apartment buildings, but these are on the NS2577 : Site of Greenock Navy Buildings.

The first-edition OS map (surveyed in 1856) shows a military site, Fort Matilda, here on Whiteforeland Point: "Fort Matilda a fort or battery on the shore a short distance west from Gourock, Government property" (OS Name Books).

The 1896 map revision shows the positions of the various War Department boundary stones that were then present, marking the bounds of Fort Matilda. The one shown here is, as the framing of the picture is intended to show, at the western extremity of the Esplanade, where it meets Eldon Road.
