The castle keep
The castle keep
This is the mighty keep of the New Castle which gives the city its name. The Norman castle was built in 1080, but nothing remains of that. The keep was built by Henry II in 1172-77. As can be seen on the extreme left, the Victorians had no qualms about putting a railway line right through the old castle, but thankfully left the keep intact.
