Niddry Bing, Winchburgh
The oil-shale waste bings of West Lothian are a unique landscape in the British Isles. The shale was mined and heated to extract the crude oil which was then refined for paraffin. The Niddry Castle Oil Works was situated by this bing and operated from the mid 19th century, closing in 1960. Today the shale is used as hardcore in the road and buildings construction industry. Niddry Bing has been excavated for 20 years and is greatly reduced in height. The excavated bowl and cones of graded shale awaiting transportation is shown in this image. It is a rather surreal landscape.
