TM1312 : Seawick: Cockett Wick counterwall

taken 1 month ago, near to Seawick, Essex, Great Britain

Seawick: Cockett Wick counterwall
Seawick: Cockett Wick counterwall
This counterwall runs from the sea defence wall near TM1312 : Jaywick: Martello Tower C to the higher ground near Cockett Wick Farm.

It is a form of auxiliary flood defence. If a breach in the sea defences occurs to the east of it, in theory the land to the west of it would be protected, and vice versa. In other words if Jaywick is flooded, Seawick would be protected, and vice versa.

The counterwall is not new, although it may have been improved over time, as it is shown on the large scale Ordnance Survey map of 1874.

St Osyth Ditch is visible to the left of it here, before passing through it, near the yellow container, to TM1312 : St Osyth Ditch and the Cockett Wick Sluice.
