The church of St Remigius at Dunston
The church of St Remigius at Dunston
The population of Dunston was almost wiped out by the Black Death in 1348/9 and it is believed that the church became ruinous at that time. St Remiguis' church > Link is located in Commonclose Plantation, on the edge of the golf course which adjoins Dunston Hall Hotel (formerly Dunston Hall), and can be reached via a wooded track > Link which turns off Stow Lane. The building was restored in Victorian times > Link - Link but retains a C15 rood screen, the lower panels of which are lost but the upper tracery with carved figures in the corners is original > Link - Link. Some of the windows contain medieval stained glass > Link - Link - Link. There is a 17th century brass. The chancel pews are of Tudor origin, as is the font, > Link. The pews in the nave are Victorian. The Alabaster decoration inside the east window is recent, the German organ > Link was given to the church in 1921. For more information see: LinkExternal link. More than 20 yew trees are growing in the churchyard and over fifty species of wild flowers have been recorded to grow here. A public footpath traverses the churchyard and the church is often open - a key is available from nearby in case the door is locked.
