Athnamulloch and the bridge
Athnamulloch and the bridge
Athnamulloch has now been done up as accommodation for conservation workers in Glen Affric. As late as after 1984 it was a shieling, a farmer brought cattle up the glen from Cannich every Summer. It was one of the duties of the warden at Alltbeithe to keep them in check and prevent them from wandering down to Kintail. This is probably the last example of transhumance in Scotland, something I have come across in Switzerland and Norway. I met the chap once when hitching out of Cannich after a long storm chased slog out of Alltbeithe one New Year.
