War memorial lychgate, Skelton churchyard
The entrance to the grounds of St Michael's Church.
The lychgate was erected in 1920, in remembrance of the nine men from this parish who gave their lives in the Great War. Their names are carved in the sandstone surround of a seat inside the gateway. There are inscriptions on the woodwork above the arch - for details see IWM war memorials register Link

A brief inscription was added to remember those who died in the 2nd World War, but they have their own memorial in the village bus shelter - see NY4335 : 2nd World War memorial tablet, Skelton .
The war memorial lychgate is a grade II listed building - see Historic England for particulars Link

) . The architect was JH Martindale of Carlisle, who also designed similar-looking gates at Wetheral (photo Link ) and Barton (photo Link ).
