Oxford Canal: Napton on the Hill winding hole
Oxford Canal: Napton on the Hill winding hole
A winding (pronounced win-ding) hole is a point where the canal has been widened to enable long narrowboats to reverse direction.

This one is not shown on any old large scale Ordnance Survey maps, so it is almost certainly not part of the original fabric of the canal. There would not have been any commercial reason to have one here, so it was probably constructed once the leisure business on the canals started, and boaters coming from the Grand Union Canal at Napton Junction needed to turn round before having to pass through the Napton flight of locks.
