The 15-mile Nottinghamshire Canal was built in 1796 from Langley Mill to the Trent at Nottingham. The canal provided the city with a direct link to the coalfields around Ripley, Eastwood and Ilkeston. Today only a 2½ mile stretch remains SK4743 : The Nottingham Canal. Moorgreen Reservoir was built at this time as one of the main water feeder sources for the canal.

Moorgreen Reservoir is perhaps best known as one of the locations used by local lad D H Lawrence in his writings. It was ‘Willey Water’ in The ‘White Peacock’ and ‘Nethermere’ in ‘Sons and Lovers’. The drowning tragedy in ‘Women in Love’ was also set here and was based on an actual incident at the reservoir in 1892.
