SK4100 : King Richard's Camp
taken 6 years ago, near to Sutton Cheney, Leicestershire, England
King Richard's Camp
Due to extensive archeological field walking and surveys carried out in the last 10 years or so, this field, to the south of Sutton Cheney, is now thought to be Richard III's base camp on 21st August 1485, the night before the Battle of Bosworth. Ambion Hill, about a mile to the west, has been discredited as the site of his camp and the actual battle as originally believed, because of the unlikely practicality of the terrain, the quantity of finds elsewhere in the area to the south east and the analysis of contemporary documents.
Imagine, if you will, looking towards the horizon on that summer's evening with few trees and no hedges or light pollution to impede your view. Imagine seeing the flickering light of the bonfires in Henry Tudor's camp on the ridge in the distance and wonder what fate awaits you in the morning.
