The Bronze Ford, Fort William
The Bronze Ford, Fort William
A bronze sculpture of a Ford Model T, replicating the car that was driven to the summit of Ben Nevis and back by Henry Alexander in May 1911, starting from here in Cameron Square. This was a publicity stunt by Ford using a standard 20-horsepower car from the Alexander Ford agency in Edinburgh. The ascent took several days over boggy ground from Inverlochy, using wooden planks as temporary bridges. The summit was snow-covered. The descent took only two and a half hours!

On the centenary in May 2011 an identical Model T was carried up in pieces and assembled at the summit. This car was used as a template for the sculpture, cast at the Powderhall Bronze Foundry in Edinburgh.

In September 1928, Henry Alexander repeated the feat in a Model A Ford, this time taking only 1 day for the ascent. The following month George Simpson from Edinburgh drove an Austin Seven to the summit and back within a day.

The sculpture is roomy and sturdy enough to take 3 passengers.
