Dumbarton Public Library
As an institution, Dumbarton's Public Library dates from 1881. It was originally based in the old Abstainer's Hall in Heggie's Buildings (High Street). Outgrowing this, it moved to the ground floor of the William Denny Institute (Church Street). It then moved to the present-day building; the gift of Andrew Carnegie, it opened in 1910. An extension was built in 1968—69 at the urging of Burgh Librarian William Martin.
