Kirkby Lonsdale Market Cross
Kirkby Lonsdale Market Cross
Kirkby Lonsdale’s old market cross now stands in the middle of Swinegate, formerly the site of the market dealing in pigs and coal. The mediæval cross comprises of a rounded shaft set in a square base on three octagonal steps. The octagonal capital was crowned in C19 with a ball finial sometime during the nineteenth century. The cross originally stood at the junction of Main Street, Market Street and Mill Brow; it was moved to Swinegate in 1822. The cross is a Grade II listed building (Historic England List Entry Number: 1145765 LinkExternal link ).
