This inscribed stone plaque is set above the entrance to the old school and (with modern spelling) reads: 'To God & the poor. The pious & Charitable gift of ROGER GILLINGHAM of the Middle Temple London, Esqr. This free Writing School & the Almshouses adjoining Were built by ALDRICH SWAN Clerk & Rector of kington magna in this County & one of the Ministers of this Parish & Pursuant to the Gift & trust of the Said Roger Gillingham. A.D. 1698.'
