HMS Trincomalee

HMS Trincomalee is an example of a classic Royal Navy sailing frigate. She was built in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1817 from Malabar teak which was less expensive than oak and had many superior qualities. Although she never saw combat, she led an active life travelling over 100,000 miles undertaking duties that included policing, protection and exploration. In modern times she has been restored as close as possible to her original condition and is part of the collection of the National Museum of the Royal Navy. She is on permanent display at Hartlepool giving visitors an insight into 19th century naval life – harsh for the ordinary sailors but quite luxurious for the senior officers.
