Grosmont Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway - Grosmont, North Yorkshire
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway faced its closure in 1965. In 1967 the NYMR Preservation Society was formed with the aim of reopening the line. Trains run from Pickering to Grosmont Station, pictured here, a distance of 18 miles. Since then the route has extended to Whitby, a distance of 24 miles, the NYMR rolling stock running over the National Rail Esk Valley Line. The station, built in 1846, is a Grade II listed building. The original tunnel of 1835 has been superseded and now forms a pedestrian route to the locomotive sheds where there is access to the sheds and a shed shop. Nominally the work of the engineer George Stephenson, the work was carried out by his assistant Frederick Swanwick. The NYMR employ a mixture of paid staff and volunteers - it is a popular and busy heritage railway. Time photo taken not available.
