SS4917 : Fruit and Vegetable Garden
taken 7 years ago, near to Great Torrington, Devon, England

The Rosemoor estate (originally Rowe’s Moor) was given to the Royal Horticultural Society in 1988 by its then owner, Lady Anne Palmer. She had become interested in plants and gardening in 1959 after meeting the plantsman Collingwood Ingram in Spain, whilst recuperating from a bout of measles. This let to extensive travelling to collect plants from around the world. By the time of her donation of the estate to the RHS, she had created an 8 acre garden around the house, with diverse planting from her travels. The rest of the estate consisted of 32 acres of pastureland. This the RHS developed into a further area of garden, involving regrading of some of the site, the damming of a small stream to create a lake, and then planting up, to give a combination of formal gardens in an informal woodland setting. It was opened to visitors on 1 June 1990.
