taken 34 years ago, near to Burgar, Orkney Islands, Great Britain

Turbines on Burgar Hill Orkney 1984
The nearer turbine is the Wind Energy Group MS1, a 250kW 2-bladed machine. Beyond is a 3-bladed Howden turbine. Also in view are anemometer masts to measure wind profiles. WEG was a consortium of British Aerospace, GEC and Taylor Woodrow. At the time of this photograph Burgar Hill was a research and development site for wind turbines, and later has become a windfarm with more modern commercial turbines.

This was taken on a site visit to both turbines in which I was lucky enough to go in the MS1 up to the nacelle while it was operating. For more background please see LinkExternal link.
